Who am I? And why should you care?

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

Well, my name is Phoebe Thompson. I was born and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand. I am an emerging film-maker, currently in my second year of a Bachelor of creative media production. So, that's me I guess!

But that's not who I am. Not really. Those are my circumstances. So if you'll let me, I'll take you on a little journey to get to know who I am deep down inside.

I am someone who has always loved stories. Ever since my dad sat little old me down in front of the television and showed me the wide worlds of Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. When I was young, I adored reading. I would tear through novel after novel. In fact, I was such a rebel, that I would read after my bedtime. Shocking, I know. This love of reading later blossomed into a love of writing in primary school. Then, as I got more access to computers, I fell in love with video games. As I grew and developed, so did my love of stories in all their many forms. Stories became a part of my identity. I was a storyteller.

As I got older, I came to the point where I had to decide what to do with my life. Some kind of story telling was the obvious choice, the only choice, really. After taking media studies through high school, I thought film-making was pretty cool, so I set off to Wellington to pursue my future. I'm super happy with my choice to come to Wellington. I have completely fallen in love with the city and the university. I find that doing a degree that is not solely focused on film-making has been advantageous, as it has allowed me to branch out into game design and develop a wide range of skills.

Another major thing about me, is that I am a woman. Now, growing up a girl is a wild ride for a multitude of reasons, but one thing for me was that I was into a lot of things that were deemed 'for boys'. Thanks to my dad, I've always loved Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, I'm an avid gamer, I enjoy superhero movies, I play Dungeons and Dragons. You know the drill. Honestly, I've always been pretty okay with this. I never really let it bother me. I like what I like. But the fact remains that you don't see a lot of good female representation in these stories. Now that I am older, I am inspired by women in the film industry. Whether this be actors, directors, producers, or editors. I am inspired by my female lecturers and tutors. A funny thing about growing up is that it makes you see things you want to change about the world. One day I hope to be able to tell women's stories. The stories you don't see told very often. The stories of normal women, the women you interact with on a daily basis. Then, one day, I hope to be able to inspire emerging female film-makers, much like myself.

You may now be thinking to yourself that you now have an idea who I am, but you're still wondering, 'Why should I care?' Well the fact of the matter is, I cannot make you care. In this blog I am going to write about things that I care about. Things that I am passionate about, things that I think are worth saying. I just hope, that maybe you can find something in it to care about too.
